What I’ve taken from my experiences in Life is that you never know where you might find some kind of outside device to assist you. These days, there are so many adaptive applications that we might not think of as adaptive tools, but an “adaptive tool” could be qualified as objects that can make our life easier. If we use them, I often hear from my clients that their lives would be much simpler if they responded to the devices placed in their lives for organizational purposes. Some of these are: Global Positioning System (GPS)- are satellites broadcast microwave signals to enable GPS receivers on or near the Earth's surface to determine location and time and derive velocity Digital or Standard Calendar- system of organizing days for social, religious, commercial or administrative purposes. Appointment Reminder-Phone, text, email, and app reminders that work with your scheduling system. Pinterest- An app to organize things for future use. Podcasts- A digital audio file made available on the Internet for downloading to a computer or mobile device, typically available as a series, new installments of which can be received by subscribers automatically. For example, talk shows, educational programs, and more are found on Podcast. eBooks-An electronic version of a printed book that can be read on a computer or handheld device designed specifically for this purpose. Text Book- A book used as a standard work for the study of a particular subject. Notebook-A small book with blank or ruled pages for writing notes in: A laptop computer, especially a small, slim one. Digital or Standard Planner- A list or chart with information that is an aid to planning. Spreadsheet- an electronic document in which data is arranged in the rows and columns of a grid and can be manipulated and used in calculations. Filing Cabinet- a piece of office furniture, typically made of steel, with deep drawers for storing documents. Safety Cabinet- A place to store important objects Time Watch- a small timepiece worn typically on a strap on one's wrist Emergency Contact & Medical Info- access to crucial medical and emergency contact information in case things go off track and out of the ordinary Survival Kit- is a package of basic tools and supplies prepared in advance as an aid to survival in an emergency. |
The Physical Adaptive Devices are tools to assist us with the physical body’s demand for our day-to-day living matters. Thanks to rapid advances in assistive technology, individuals have a seemingly limitless number of tools at their disposal. These can assist with the organizational aspects of effective learning tools, making a huge difference to remain efficient in life.
Physical Adaptive Devices:
Graphic Organizer- organize thoughts of an individual during a writing process
Text-to-Speech- a software designed to converts normal language text into speech
Proofreading Software- goes above and beyond typical proofreading systems, such as correcting words and assist individuals with their language skill set to become more effective and an accurate writer.
Alerting Devices- connect with door bells, telephones and other alarming devices
Recreational Devices- swings, bikes, etc.
What kind of adaptive tools would be helpful to you in your life? The important thing is that the tool is helpful to you. Change the things in your life to better suit your needs. Maybe it’s time to bite the bullet and get seen for eyeglasses, schedule a health consultation with a holistic Practitioner, or perhaps invest in a blender to create healthy smoothies for your busy mornings.
Is there a larger problem in your life that could be adjusted to make what you do easier? We decided to buy a home in Georgia so that we would be in proximity to our closest family members. What kind of big change could you make to go further to the life you dream of? This can be a way-far-off goal, like to travel to China! Think of long-term happiness too.
When thinking of Adaptive Devices, I am reminded of a woman who had to be brave & use incredible amounts of determination to recover from past challenges. She is bold, heroic, & inspiring.
