Defining Eczema | Holistically10/27/2018
"Those who think they have no time for healthy eating ....
First, briefly, I’ll share with you my own personal experience with skin irritation. About two months ago, I would unnoticeably reach down to scratch itchy knees. Then I noticed a change to both elbows and knees as they felt “rough”, abnormally raised and slightly hardened to touch when I had applied a moisturizer to these areas. So, when I observed the skin change, nearly right away a warning sign initiated that something was obviously indifferent about my body. As you continue to read on, I will reveal the cause and quick resolve to my skin flare-up.
Granted I knew exactly how to identify eczema from my stent of treating multiple patients at a retirement community for nine years, as various skin ailments had occurred all of the time, and now adamantly studying Naturopathic medicine, I believe that there is a great disconnect to the underline causes to skin irritation, such as eczema and how all of these diversions are simple to explore.
According to studies, dermatitis was estimated to affect 245 million people globally in 2015. A rule of thumb to remember is that medically the general term for any type of skin inflammation is called Dermatitis. The most common types of dermatitis are Atopic Dermatitis, Nummular Dermatitis, Irritant Contact Dermatitis, and Allergic Contact Dermatitis.
The distinction between Eczema and Dermatitis to describe a skin disorder can be puzzling as both terms are almost always used synonymously. A lot of people use the term eczema to refer exclusively to atopic Dermatitis. The inflammation of the skin that coexists with dermatitis, or eczema produces scaling, flaking, thickening, weeping, crusting, color changing and very often itching. Underlying Imbalances
2. CLIMATE Other external influences are the weather changing from warm to cold, a dry atmosphere, exposure to allergens, stress, or infections like colds can emphasize this condition. 3. LATEX / PRODUCT /METAL ALLERGY The most common case of dermatitis result from allergies called allergic contact dermatitis. As skin inflammation may be linked to contact with medical creams, perfumes, latex, ointments, cosmetics, rubber, poison ivy, metal or metal alloys such as gold, silver, and nickel found in jewelry or zippers. 4. GENETIC You may also be inflicted if other family members have a history of hay fever, such as myself, asthma, and/or atopic dermatitis. In these cases, it is likely that a child is prone to atopic dermatitis that will develop based off of the factors mentioned at any given time throughout his/her lifetime. 5. INTESTINAL IMBALANCE Another factor that may lead to eczema is a condition known as “leaky gut”, low levels of hydrochloric acid in the stomach called hypochlorhydria. This can occur when the intestines become porous and allow small particles of undigested food to enter the bloodstream, evoking an allergic reaction. This can be detected by a urine test, and more information may be found here: Testing for leaky gut syndrome-https://www.sovereignlaboratories.com/blog/testing-for-leaky-gut/. 6. YEAST A genetically base imbalance in the enzyme delta-6-desaturase, which is an overgrowth of yeast in the system called candidiasis may contribute to eczema. Please see more information on how to identify candidiasis here: CDC https://www.cdc.gov/fungal/diseases/candidiasis/index.html. 7. SUNLIGHT Finally, some people have a sensitivity to sunlight that may cause skin irritation. This is more detectable during warmer summer months. If your skin remains in direct contact with the irritant, then the dermatitis is likely to spread and become more acute. In this skin “breakdown” summary are the various types of eczema. ~Atopic Dermatitis also referred as atopic eczema, or in children, infant eczema is an ailment connected to allergy-prone individuals. It typically appears to the face, bends of elbows, behind knees, and is chronically itchy. According to Naturopaths, it usually appears within the first year, and almost always within the first five years. While women who take probiotics during pregnancy have had success at reducing atopic dermatitis in their infants. ~Seborrhea causes scaly patches and red skin to the scalp and/or face, which is believed to be an abundant growth of yeast in the body. ~Dermatitis Herpetifom is is a chronic, itchy skin rash that appears as bumps or blisters. This ailment is connected to intestinal and immune systems disorders triggered by the consumption of dairy and/or gluten products. ~Nummular dermatitis a chronic condition in which round, scaling lesions appear on the limbs. This may be caused by an allergy to nickel and frequently associated with dry skin. Considerations

Overall, be vigilant and consciously aware of chronic stress, toxic products applied to the skin or the types of food being ingested for they are your mapping to external health and wellbeing. I get that it’s difficult to break cycles, but if it were easy, everyone would be doing it. All it takes is just one person to break a pattern of our miseducation.
