PURCHASING QUALITY ESSENTIAL OILS
Shopping for quality essential oils either for therapeutic purposes or for calming effects will allow you to become aware of their level of medicinal grades, farming practices, and its therapeutic properties which can affect your body systems. In pure essential oils, there are hundreds of chemical components that interact when they are mixed together, increasing their individual excellency bringing holistic health to quality essential oils.
High-quality essential oils are often very expensive, but you can be sure that they contain the correct elements in the correct proportions and the desired therapeutic properties. Commercial grade essential oils have been distilled again, forming a lower-grade oil, or have materials added or removed to improve odor, safety, etc. Synthetic or diluted essential oils are less predictable and less likely to be therapeutically effective.
The time and effort that goes into producing good-quality essential oils means they can be costly. Therefore, it is important to be aware that cheaper, adulterated essential oils are on the market and that these will not be as effective as the pricier, pure essential oils.
The main methods of adulterating essential oils are:
- Adding a cheaper oil
- Diluting with alcohol or other bases
- Adding a synthetic substance
- Substitution for a cheaper essential oil
SYNTHETIC ESSENTIAL OILS
|
Standardizing and adulterating both alter the original composition of an essential oil.
Practices such as adding cheaper lavandin to lavender oil, or adding corn mint oil (menthaarvenisis) to peppermint oil are, unfortunately, widespread(Hoare). Of greater concern is the use of substitute products or “nature-identical” synthetics: Cassia oil has been found to contain synthetic cinnamic aldehyde, and “red thyme” oil may be wholly synthetic (Hoare). If the oil is not what you believe it to be, its effectiveness, and even safety, can be compromised (Hoare).
Standardization is the adjustment of essential oils so it conforms to a given standard: this is done openly for customers who expect a specific composition. Example: Lavender 40/42, partly or fully synthetic lindyl acetate is added to oil so its concentration reaches between 40 - 40%. If this is information is hidden and the customer is lead to believe that it is a pure plant product, we would call this adulteration.
|
To discern that an essential oil is in fact pure and authentic is most easily accomplished by:
- Knowing its source
- Ascertaining the name of the producing company
- Compare essential oil samples to authentic samples of the producer
- Cost
- Reputable supplier
Most essential oils are distilled and standardized for use in other productions, so those suppliers meticulously sourcing and selling quality essential oils intentionally for therapeutic uses and aromatherapy are aware of important factors regarding its process of evolution.
- Soil conditions
- Seed quality
- Climate
- Altitude
- Growing conditions
- Harvesting
- Care during distillation
- Bottling
- storage
The time and effort involved in producing quality essential oils, harvesting the plants which depend largely on the parts of the plant that are used and their oil content, the cost of production, and extraction process are valued by their medicinal grades.
There are many commercial grades essential oils marked as “aromatherapy”, but they are either not made with quality essential oils or contain synthetic fragrances and other impurities. So, if you come across a company that uses the terms “aromatherapy grade” or “therapeutic grade”, ideally you’d research other key indicators of their essential oil properties to determine their particular intent behind the use of the terms. Most companies provide details on their website that define their specific usage of the term.
CLASSIFYING ESSENTIAL OILS
Pure Grade Organic
- Essential oils are from organic flowers, plants, and trees that are certified by the U.S standards and inspections. They are considered pure medical grade oils.
Pure Medical Grade/Therapeutic Grade
- Essential oils are 100% pure and completely natural. This means that they do not contain any synthetic or unnatural adulterations. They are determined to be pure through quality control from the point of growth, processing, and laboratory analysis.
Aromatherapy Grade
- Essential oils are adulterated with natural and unnatural components and additives.
Commercial Grade
- Essential oils have been distilled again, creating a lower-grade oil, or have components added or removed to improve odor or safety.
Grade A
Grade B
|
Grade C
|
When you use quality essential oils in the form of an organic/therapeutic grade, you can benefit from their antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and even anti-microbial properties. Quality essential oils supply healing power, and in some homes, they are used as a natural medicine that has no side effects.

THE TOPIC(AL) SOLUTION
Using essential oils are different in ways that pills are warranted due to the physical nature of oils from the often water-soluble and powdery form of most drugs. Applying essential oils topically presents an advantage if the digestive system is compromised or an individual is unable to take oral dosing. Employ essential oils topically for resistant small children, those who find herbal treatment to be unpalatable or have difficulty swallowing. In this way, as essential oils are applied topically, they are immediately absorbed into the bloodstream.
|
CONSCIOUS WELL-BEING
A topical essential oil application can promote well-being in many ways. For instance, peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils may reduce discomfort related to headaches, as stated by researchers in Germany- They’ve discovered that applying the essential oils with a sponge to the forehead and temples decreased the discomfort in half of the cases.
*Creams & Lotions:
Essential oils can integrate into cleansers, toners, and moisturizers. Select a base that is non-perfumed and produced with pure, natural ingredients.
*Hot Compress:
Alleviate muscular discomfort and arthritic conditions
*Cold Compress:
A great first aid treatment for sprains, swelling, and to relieve inflammation. Also if applied to the feet they can reduce fever.
*Massage:
The purpose is to rapidly absorb the oils through the integumentary system (skin). The circular and smoothing motion is an essential part of topical applications because it warms the skin by increasing the blood supply, stimulate lymph flow, speed up the elimination of toxic waste from the body, to act on the nerve supply, and correct pressure points.

COMMON CARRIER OILS for TOPICAL USE
|
|
APPLY with CAUTION & CARE~
cream, lotion, compresses, & massage oils
For other individuals, a two percent dilution of 14 to 20 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier base may be used. Until you are comfortable with the results of the oils, you should always start with less. You can always add additional. If you notice that the mixture is too overpowering, just dilute with more carrier base.
EXAMPLE RECIPE
*SAMPLE FORMULA TO MAKE A 2% ESSENTIAL OIL BLEND 2 drops Ginger 2 drops Cardamom 1 drop Lemon 2 drops Peppermint 4 drops Lavender 3 drops German Chamomile |
*Creams & Lotions:
Lotions, creams, and oils are moisturizing and soothing.
- Add up to 10 drops of essential oils to each ounce (2tablsepoons/30ml) of light natural cream or lotion, such as apricot oil. The “oil-infusion” is best when kept in a dark glass container. If you have a clear glass container, keep it in a cool, dark space to extend its shelf life. Your oil should be reusable and effective for several months. Yet, you may want to check periodically for any stale or rancid odor, cloudiness indicating microbial contamination-if this occurs, do not use.
~Compresses aids in the relief of pain, inflammation, lethargy, improves circulation, headaches, fluid, and lymphatic congestion. Using cloths made with natural materials only, while instilling just enough water to soak the compress.
*Hot Compress:
|
*Cold Compress:
- Follow the same instructions as the *hot compress but use 100ml (3-4fl oz) of cold water and six ice cubes. Do not let the cold compress dry out. You may also alternate between cold and hot compresses which can improve circulation in injuries, such as sprain ligaments and bruises.
*Massage:
- Some studies show that the therapies thought to be most beneficial are those that include massage. For your continued well-being at home, a massage therapy technique may be performed at your residence by a professional, or you may simply visit a local spa.
GENERAL SAFETY
*Certain basic rules should be observed when using essential oils topically for well-being at Home:
- Keep essential oils out of reach of children
- Never exceed the recommended dilution
- Never apply essential oils directly to the skin
- When working with small children, applying the blend to the feet, lower legs, and back reduces the risk of the oil getting into the mouth and eyes
- It is important to purchase reputable brands and be alert to the sale of adulterated
|
Aromatherapy treatments alone is not enough to give us health, youth, and happiness. It should be supported by a healthy, balanced lifestyle that includes eating a healthy, balanced diet that is rich in seasonal foods, not over-indulging in food or alcoholic drinks, getting plenty of regular sleep, balancing the emotions, and trying to lead a stress-free existence in which you are not constantly rushing around (Maury, 2004).
